Introduction
We live in an increasingly global world that is becoming more
economically, socially, politically, culturally
and scientifically integrated. In the advent of globalization,
we are faced with new challenges including spread of animal and
human pandemics.
One way to confront these threats is to
adjust curricula in a way that will promote globalization of
research and career opportunities. In line with this, the
Department of Veterinary & Microbiological Sciences at North
Dakota State University, in conjunction with the Department
of Veterinary Public Health & Preventive Medicine, Makerere
University, Kampala, Uganda, have developed this course designed to
facilitate diversity in student training and exposure.
The
course will contribute to producing a broadly inclusive, open
minded, world class, and globally engaged science work force.
Studying international animal production, food safety and public
health systems will provide a foundation for tomorrow's global
citizens. This program also provides shared opportunities
through collaborative research and/or fieldwork in Uganda and the
United States in areas of mutual interest. About
Uganda Uganda is located in east-central
Africa, across the equator and is situated north and northwest of Lake
Victoria. It is a landlocked country bordered by Sudan on the North,
Kenya on the east, Tanzania on the South, Rwanda on the southwest
and Democratic Republic of Congo on the northwest.
The
greater part of the country consists of a
plateau about 4,000 ft in height. Along the western border of the
Ruwenzori Mountains reaching heights of over 16,000 ft, while on the
eastern frontier Mount Elgon rises to 14,178 ft. By contrast, the
Western Rift Valley, which runs from north to south through the
western half of the country, is as low as 3,000 ft on the floor of
Lake Edward and Lake George and 2,000 ft on the flow of Lake Albert.
The White Nile River has its source in Lake Victoria.

Makerere University
Study at Makere
University, one of the most prestigious
universities in Africa. Makerere University, established
in 1922, is Uganda's premier institution of higher learning.
With a student population of over 30,000, it ranks as one of
the largest in East and Central Africa.
It is located on Makerere Hill, one of the many
hills on which Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, is built.
The main campus is about 5km to the north of the city centre,
covering an area of 300 acres (two square
kilometres).

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Makerere University
The faculty was established at Makerere University in 1971 with the aim of producing quality veterinary graduates to serve in state sponsored veterinary departments. Since then about 1000 veterinarians have graduated from the faculty. Many graduates of this faculty have been instrumental in national and international research and development. With globalization, alterations in macro-economic policy and the cross-cutting nature of veterinary science, the faculty’s vision and mission have evolved and transformed. The faculty has expanded, growing from a mono-degree institution, offering the state sponsored classical Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree, to a multi-degree and multifunction institution offering diverse degree courses in veterinary and allied sciences. Presently, the faculty offers 5 undergraduate degrees and at least 11 postgraduate programs.
Further a field, the faculty has links with leading veterinary schools in Europe and North America. These institutions have played a leading role in training our staff at postgraduate level, they have hosted our scientists on short term research visits and facilitated establishment of joint research collaboration.

Communal Livestock production
While in Uganda, Take
Time to enjoy “This land of rolling hills, tranquil
lakes, the snow capped Mountains of the Moon, rainforests and
jungles, gorillas and chimps, savannah plains, elephants and
lions, world class rapids on the Nile River before it
thunders down the Murchison Falls - glorious butterflies
abound outnumbered only by the plentiful birds.
The
scenery is different, the vegetation is different, the climate
is different, and, most of all, the people are different from
anything elsewhere in the whole range of Africa.
Uganda is truly the
pearl of Africa”
By Winston
Churchill
